MY SCHOOL REUNION

My junior high school class reunion was held at Hagoromo hall in Tatebayashi city.
I was born in Tatebayashi and spent a happy childhood there. Though the reunion is usually been held on the day before New Year’s Day, this was the first time I attended it in thirty something years. So, I couldn’t wait to see my dear classmates. Especially, I wanted to see Kenichi Murayama, “Ken-chan”. He lived nearby my house and we used to play everyday in our childhood. He was cool, intelligent and nice looking. My heart was leaping up!!!
In the Hagoromo hall, I heard shouts of joy here and there. At first, we all stood facing eachother for a moment. Next, we squealed with delight. We needed a moment to remember one another. Most women were easy to recognize but men……it was very difficult to know who was who. This is because they had completely changed, especially their hair. I was looking for Ken-chan. Oh! My God!! He also had transformed into another man. He had white hair and a white beard. I was very surprised to see such a change in him. He said to me “Oh, dear, it’s nice to see you, Sacchan.” He called me by my nickname. We talked about what we are doing now and about our classmates and those who used to play with us. He still lives in the same place, so he knew what the others were doing now. They couldn’t attend this time. The way he talked reminded me of how he used to be. Ken-chan was Ken-chan even though his appearance has changed. I forgot time.
We were born in a baby boom; therefore, we had a large number of classmates. There were more than 500 people in our junior high school year. At the reunion there were about 70 people. I felt the peaks and valleys of life. Some of us had passed away or were missing. I couldn’t believe it. But, all of us had gotten old, even though almost all had lived happy and active lives. The three hours passed quickly, we forgot time and even to eat. We were all excited.
Finally, we concluded with our school song. We all sang enthusiastically. After, we shook hands with one another while saying “Good-bye and see you next reunion.”
I couldn’t sleep that night as my emotions were still running high.
